Components of Mesh Pool Fence

Components of Mesh Pool Fence

When you get into the process of installing a mesh pool fence on your property, you are quickly going to learn that there are a number of components involved in the make-up of a complete mesh pool fence system. A nylon mesh pool fence looks rather simple when it’s complete – and it is pretty simple overall – but there are still quite a few parts involved in its construction as well as installation. All these components, when installed properly, will ensure your mesh net pool fence is able to serve its purpose successfully by providing a safety barrier for your loved ones.

Mesh Fence Materials and Parts

The typical removable mesh net pool fence is going to include mostly parts that you would expect to find in this kind of project. There will be the mesh itself, which is a specifically-designed mesh pool fence material. In addition, you will have items like the poles (which in most cases come already attached to the mesh fencing), the gate – including hinges and gate latches – sleeves to secure the poles in the ground, and more. Various types of hooks, anchors, and other mounting hardware are also necessary to complete a mesh fence installation.  These parts, such as hooks and anchors, are used to attach the ends of the mesh fence to block walls or your home in some cases. Speciality hardware may also be needed in situations where attaching parts of the fence are not possible otherwise.

Pool Fence Mesh Fabric

types of mesh fabric
3 different types of  fence mesh – Interlock, Textilene, and Standard Vinyl mesh fence fabric.

There are a few different types of mesh fabric you’ll see on various fences from different manufacturers. Some are more transparent than others, some are more durable. Other fabrics are prone to fading or rip and tear easily. Ask your supplier to describe the characteristics that make their mesh the best on the market. Understanding the material make-up, it’s tensile strength, mesh spacing (sometimes called transparency percentage), and types of coatings will help in the decision process.

If the supplier is willing to offer an extended warranty on their mesh material you’re likely getting a decent fabric. On the other hand, be weary of imitations and knock-offs, they do exist and they will not hold up to the test of time compared to name brand mesh fabrics. You get what you pay for when it comes to mesh strength and durability.

Mesh Pool Fence Poles

This is where the fun begins. There are many different types of mesh fence pole variations – reinforced y-poles, fiberglass poles, solid core poles, etc. Fence poles have evolved over the years with new designs and different materials, each one claiming to be the strongest. As a consumer, this competition is good news when it comes to child safety. The recent innovations in poles for mesh fencing is truly remarkable. For example, just a few short years ago, poles would break under a mere 40 pounds of stress. Today’s mesh poles can withstand well over 100 lbs.

So which mesh fence pole is the best? We’ll let the engineers answer that question. The experts have created demonstration videos, written numerous research papers, and still continue to debate, “which one is better”. That said, there are some key factors to note when researching any pole. Most poles are made of aluminum these days due to the strength to weight ratio and cost factor. Steer clear of plastic and fiberglass poles, as these tend to get brittle under the sun and can break more easily. Take note of the wall thickness of the pole, it should be at least 1/8″ thick, including any internal reinforcement. The thicker the material, the stronger the pole will be. Thinner walled poles are cheap knock-offs, they are unsafe, and should be avoided.

Secondly, look for triangular shapes in the reinforcement design of the pole. Triangles are the strongest shape because any added force is spread evenly across all three sides. Lastly, there are materials much stronger than aluminum. If the core of the pole is reinforced with steel or another high-strength material, it will be a much stronger pole than it’s hollow fence pole counterpart.

Strongest Mesh Fence Poles

Solid core and quad-core poles tend to be the stronger mesh fence poles.

Reinforced core and the tri-core pole for mesh fences have reasonable strength.

Stay Away from these

Weak mesh fence poles
These are examples of the weakest mesh fence poles.

Bringing all of these mesh pool fence parts together can increase the complexity for a complete DIY job, which is why many people choose to bring in installation help rather than taking on the project solely on their own. It is certainly possible to install your own nylon mesh pool fence, but you will need to have both patience and some basic construction know-how.
